İZMİR - Stating that ill prisoner Enver Yanik has many health problems, his wife Sukriye Yanik called for a fair trial and release.

Family and friends of Enver Yanik, an ill prisoner in Sakran T-Type Closed Prison, made a statement at Human Rights Association (IHD) Izmir Branch. Sukriye Yanik stated that her husband Enver Yanik, who has Wernicke Korsakoff disease, was arrested in 2005, released in 2010 and re-arrested on 7 October 2024.

Sukriye Yanik stated that her husband was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment and 22 years and 6 months of imprisonment and said, "The person who is presented as a witness in the file is the only evidence against him in the case. The only evidence for Yanik, who is alleged to have bombed ten places, is a witness statement. The witness repeatedly used expressions such as 'I heard - he told me that our people did it'. In other words, he does not have any eyewitness or direct information. There is no other concrete evidence in the file."

YANIK'S HEALTH PROBLEMS

Sukriye Yanik said, "Yanik's file was examined and approved in 20 days as soon as the file was registered at the appeal stage. His file is now at the Court of Cassation. Enver Yanik is a veteran of the '96 death fast, and suffers from severe memory problems due to Wernicke Korsakoff after the death fast. He personally experienced the '99 Ulucanlar Massacre and as a result of the massacre, the state was obliged to pay him compensation by an ECtHR judgement. He suffered from hydrocephalus after the massacre and has dozens of problems such as two bullets in his body from the massacre, physical deformities and curvatures. Yanık lived through the 19 December 2000 massacre in prisons. In 2003, he was released after a campaign against him due to his illnesses and an Forensic Medicine Institute (ATK) report. As a matter of fact, in the first weeks of his arrest in October 2024, he fainted, was hospitalised, his sugar and blood pressure increased, and finally he had heart problems."

Sukriye Yanik stressed: "We demand a fair trial for Enver Yanik and the immediate release of an ill prisoner who has not left the country for 20 years. Yanik should be provided with healthier conditions as soon as possible. A fair trial is a right. Freedom for ill prisoners, freedom for Enver Yanik."
