Fatma Özbay, an ill prisoner held in Şakran Women's Closed Prison in İzmir Aliağa, was released after 29 years. Fatma Özbay was held in many prisons such as Bayburt, Erzurum and Nevşehir, was diagnosed with breast cancer in Erzurum Prison. 

 

Fatma Özbay was transferred to Şakran Prison, had one breast removed due to cancer. Fatma Özbay also has many health problems, had her left eye retina torn due to chemotherapy and underwent a laser operation. Occasional black spots started to appear in her right eye. Bone resorption also started and this health problem of Fatma Özbay progressed further with cancer treatment. A nodule was detected in her right throat and a 6-month follow-up was recommended. Stains were detected in her lung and liver; although it was stated that these stains could be caused by radiotherapy, they were not followed up. Fatma Özbay also suffers from chronic migraine.

Fatma Özbay was detained on 7 May 1997 in Şirnex (Şırnak) province and arrested and sent to Mardin Midyat M Type Closed Prison, was sentenced to life imprisonment on the charge of "disrupting the unity and territorial integrity of the state". During her 29 years in prison, she wrote articles, poems and stories. Fatma Özbay's story "Mirî Birîndar Nabin (The dead are not injured)" is included in the 112-page book Zindandaki Kadınların Öyküleri (Stories of Women in Prisons) published by Aram Publishing.
