ISTANBUL - A global letter campaign called "I want to meet with Öcalan" will be launched.
The campaign "Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan and political solution to the Kurdish question" was launched on 10 October 2023 to ensure the physical freedom of Kurdish People's Leader Abdullah Öcalan and a democratic political solution to the Kurdish question. In this context, while actions and events were organised in many parts of the world, a global letter campaign will be launched under the name "I want to meet with Öcalan".
Speaking to ANF, Zübeyde Zümrüt, one of the spokespersons of the "Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan, Solution to the Kurdish Question" campaign, said that Abdullah Öcalan's call on 27 February was the third stage of the global campaign.
Zübeyde Zümrüt said, "Lawyers draw attention to the 'right to hope' in this context. In September last year, the Council of Europe made it an absolute requirement that Turkey realise the reform of aggravated life imprisonment by September 2025. Therefore, this step must now be taken. Our campaign also aims at the release of all political prisoners. Our efforts in this direction will continue to intensify. This campaign, which is being carried out simultaneously both in Turkey and internationally, is laying the foundation stones of a new democratic process."
'I WANT TO MEET WITH ÖCALAN'
Reminding the 86th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to be held at the end of June, Hatip Dicle, one of the spokespersons of the campaign, announced that they aim to bring the "right to hope" regulation into force during this session and that they will work to put pressure on Turkey. "European institutions must now take concrete steps and ensure that Turkey fulfils its obligations," Hatip Dicle said.
Reminding that Abdullah Öcalan's 27 February call was praised in the European Parliament's report on Turkey adopted last week, Dicle said, "This shows that the understanding of the Kurdish issue has deepened in European politics and the expectation for a solution has become institutionalised."
Dicle also announced that they would launch a new global letter campaign with the slogan "I want to meet with Öcalan".
